Ainsworth, Robert (1660-1743)

Biographisches Stichwort

Robert Ainsworth ist im September 1660 in Woodyale bei Manchester geboren. Er ging 1698 nach London, leitete ein Internat in Bethnal Green, später in Hackney und anderen Orten. Als er dadurch zu etwas Wohlstand gekommen war, gab er seinen Beruf auf und widmete sich nur noch seinen Liebhabereien, vor allem sammelte er mit Leidenschaft Münzen und andere Antiquitäten. Ainsworth starb verwitwet und kinderlos am 4. April 1743 im Alter von 83 Jahren.

Zu Benjamin Wrigglesworth Beatson (1803-1874), John Carey (1756-1826), John Dymock, William Ellis und Alexander Jamieson liegen noch keine biographischen Angaben vor.

Schon um 1714 beschlossen Londoner Buchhändler, ein neues lateinisch-englisches Wörterbuch herauszubringen. Sie beauftragten Ainsworth mit der Herausgabe, aber das Unternehmen verzögerte sich aus verschiedenen Gründen immer weiter, und erst 1736 konnte das Buch in erster Auflage erscheinen. Es war sehr erfolgreich und verdrängte schnell den bis dahin beliebten Dictionarius von Littleton.

Bitte beachten:
Die genaue Unterscheidung der Ausgaben ist mir leider bisher noch nicht gelungen: es gibt eine "folio edition" und eine "quarto edition", daneben abgekürzte Schulausgaben: "abridgment" und "new abridgment", wobei es durchaus sein kann, daß hier aufgrund der oft unvollständigen Bibliotheksangaben einige Ausgaben falsch eingeordnet sind. Für klärende Informationen wäre ich sehr dankbar!
