John Walker, am 18. März 1732 in Colney Hatch (Middlesex)
geboren, war zunächst Schauspieler und arbeitete u.a. mit Garrick am Drury Lane
Theatre. 1768 gab er die Schauspielerei auf, unterrichtete mehrere Jahre als
Lehrer in Kensington und trat zum katholischen Glauben über. 1775 erschien sein "Rhyming
Dictionary", das ebenso erfolgreich war wie das "Critical Pronouncing
Dictionary" von 1791. Walker war mit den bedeutendsten Gelehrten seiner
Zeit befreundet, u.a. mit Johnson und Burke. Er starb am 1. August 1807 in
London.
William Trollope (1798-1863) lehrte am Pembroke College, Cambridge. Der
amerikanische Lexikograph Joseph
Emerson Worcester, geboren am 24. August 1784 in Bedford, NewHampshire,
veröffentlichte zunächst Schulbücher, um sich dann ganz der Lexikographie
zuzuwenden. Als er 1830 sein "Comprehensive Pronouncing and Explanatory
Dictionary of the English Language" veröffentlichte, wurde er von seinem
großen Konkurrenten, Noah Webster, des Plagiats beschuldigt. Es kam zu einem
erbitterten Streit, dem berüchtigten "Dictionary War", der bis zum
Tode Worcesters andauerte. Am erfolgreichsten war sein illustriertes
"Dictionary of the English Language" (1860). Worcester starb am 27. Oktober 1865 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
