Biographisches Stichwort
William Smith, 1813 in Enfield geboren, widmete
sich nach Ausflügen in die Fächer Theologie und Jura den klassischen Sprachen.
Er lehrte an der University College School unter Thomas Hewitt Key,
schrieb zahlreiche Schulbücher und gab Textausgaben antiker Autoren heraus.
Berühmt wurde er u.a. durch sein "Dictionary of Greek and Roman
Antiquities" (1842) und das "Bible Dictionary" (1860-65). Ein
Jahr vor seinem Tod wurde er in den Ritterstand versetzt und durfte sich Sir
William nenen - eine Ehre, die er, wie es heißt, nur widerwillig annahm. Smith
starb am 7. Oktober 1893 in London.
Zu Theophilus Dwight Hall und Sir
John Francis Lockwood (gest.
1965) sind noch keine biographischen Angaben vorhanden.
