Gouldman, Francis (1607-1688)

Francis Gouldman, um das Jahr 1607 geboren, besuchte von 1623 an das Christ's College (Cambridge). Nach Erlangung der akademischen Grade eines BA (1627) und MA (1630) wurde er 1634 Pfarrer in South Ockendon, Essex. Er starb vermutlich im Jahr 1688 und wurde in Lancashire beerdigt. Zusammen mit John Pearson und Anthony Scattergood veröffentlichte er die neunbändige Sammlung "Critici sacri", die Essays zur Bibelexegese und Bibelkritik umfaßte. 

Anthony Scattergood, im September 1611 geboren, besuchte das Trinity College (Cambridge), wo er 1633 den Grad eines BA erwarb. Von 1637 bis 1640 war er als Kaplan am Trinity College tätig, danach wurde er Pfarrer in Winwick (Northamptonshire). Daneben hatte er auch noch andere geistliche Ämter inne. Scattergood starb am 30. Juli 1687. 

William Robertson war Hebraist. Er starb ca. 1686.  

A copious dictionary in three parts
I. The English before the Latin, enriched with about ten thousand words more then any former dictionary contains.
II. The Latin before the English, with correct and plentiful observations, and phraseological explications.
III. The proper names of persons, places and other things necessary to the understanding of historians and poets.
To which are adjoined a table of authors names at large, which in this book are made use of, or mentioned, and also some lesser tractates.
The whole being a comprisal of Thomasius and Rider's foundations, Holland's and Holyaok's superstructure and improvements:
Together with amendments and enlargements very considerable for number and nature, promoted and carried on by a diligent search into, and perusal of several other dictionaries, and many authors ancient and modern:
Rendering this work the most complete and useful of any in this kind yet extant, as the preface doth particularly declare, and the book itself will more fully evidence .

Der zweite Teil hat den Titel "Dictionarium etymologicum, philologicum", der dritte "Dictionarium historico-geographico-poeticum".

Die aus dem Hebräischen stammenden Wörter wurden in der 3. Auflage von William Robertson beigesteuert.
