John Entick (Bild links), vermutlich um 1703 geboren, wohnte in Stepney (heute ein Stadtteil von London). Nach seiner Schulausbildung ("a regular academical Education of ten years at College") war er etwa 50 Jahre lang als Lehrer und Privatlehrer tätig. Zeitweise war er Lohnschreiber für Edward Dilly und verfaßte, wie man in der Wikipedia nachlesen kann, für 200 £ im Jahr regierungsfeindliche Artikel. Nach einer Hausdurchsuchung und der Beschlagnahme von Papieren verklagte er die Behörden. Er gewann den Prozeß und erhielt - in der Sache Entick vs. Carrington (1765) - einen Schadenersatz von 300 £ zugesprochen. Es war ein für die englische Rechtsgeschichte wichtiges Urteil. Ein Engelein scheint Entick aber nicht gewesen zu sein: wenn man der englischen Wikipedia Glauben schenken will, hat er den akademischen Grad eines M.A. zu Unrecht getragen und sich im Gewand eines Geistlichen abbilden lassen, um seinen Ruf zu verbessern. Eine Witwe, die er 1760 heiratete, verlor er noch im selben Jahr. Er selbst starb am 22. Mai 1773, etwa 70jährig, in Stepney. Entick veröffentliche 1728 ein "Speculum Latinum", ein Jahr später "Evidences of Christianity", 1754 besorgte er eine Phaedrus-Ausgabe, es folgten eine "New Naval History" (1757), eine "General History of the Late War" (1763) und ein "New Spelling Dictionary" (1765). 

William Crakelt, 1741 geboren, war von 1762 bis zu seinem Tod Geistlicher in Northfleet in Kent. Zugleich unterrichtete er an der Northfleet Grammar School. Auf einem Titelblatt wird er als "Rector of Nursted and Ifield in Kent" bezeichnet. Crakelt starb am 22. August 1812 in Northfleet. Er hat nach Enticks Tod nicht nur dessen Wörterbuch. sondern auch das "New Spelling Dictionary" bearbeitet.
